Raven wasn't the first colorful gown I designed, but it was the first black wedding dress. This dramatic look was the opening dress for my Still Life runway show in New York. I was inspired by the beauty of Dutch Still Life paintings which have a moody, mysterious aura, and the idea was to bring one of those paintings to life as a dress. These 17th century masterworks often depict a vase filled with flowers set against a dark table and backdrop. I had the idea of layering black tulle over ivory sequined embroidery not only to ensure the gown felt "bridal", but also so that the shimmer would glisten in a very subtle way; an homage to the lighting seen in those masterpieces. And of course the flowers embroidered in silk threads had to be lush and colorful. When that model stepped out on the runway, there were gasps in the audience, and I'm happy to say that we're still creating this dress for some fabulous brides looking for a bold and unforgettable gown! 
And yes, sometimes classic ivory is the perfect choice, so I did create an Ivory version of Raven. They're kind of like sisters, each with their own very distinct personality, and when they find the right bride, I love them both. Every collection I've designed has some dresses with color, and they are often some of my most unique creations. Shangri-La is another statement piece from the Vagabond Collection. Made of striped metallic gold French lace and colorful embroidery in shades of aqua blue, fuchsia and olive, the gown has a completely different look in all ivory, but it's stunning either way. 
Another beauty from the Vagabond Collection, Santorini has been popular both with the colorful floral bodice and blush silk skirt, and in the all ivory version. Pearls and delicate beading adorn 3-D chiffon flowers blooming on the bodice and sheer long sleeves, and an elaborate Guipure lace waist cascades into a flowing silk charmeuse skirt. 
When we talk about light colors, such as the champagne and gold tones in our Soleil gown, I always remind my brides that everything photographs lighter, especially pale colors, and especially with the soft and airy style of most wedding photography. In the photos below, this is our Ivory/Silver version in the foreground, but the Golden sample behind, looks like a soft Ivory even though in person, you see more of Soleil's champagne tones. I recommend that our brides choose shades of white, ivory, champagne, blue, blush or ANY color that compliments their skin tone and makes them feel the most beautiful. 
From Eden with her blue silk lining from the Gothic Angel Collection, to Maia and Primavera's colorful flowers from the Four Seasons Collection, to the Timeless Ophelia gown, I have to admit, I have a soft spot for my brides who choose a touch of color. Whether just a hint of champagne, blush, black, gold, or blue, I still believe that you should choose a gown that makes you feel your most beautiful, and don't worry, everyone will know you are the bride!
